Mit Free Online Poker Class
In 2015, we featured a short MIT course called Poker Theory and Analytics, which introduced students to poker strategy, psychology, and decision-making in eleven lectures. Now comes a new course, this one more squarely focused on Texas Hold 'Em. Aug 13, 2015 Now you can take the same course, Poker Theory and Analytics, through MIT’s OpenCourseWare online for free. What do you get? Videos starting with Introduction to Poker Theory; Lecture notes on topics such as Poker Economics, plus assignments; Links to free online poker games, equity calculators, and animators.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been home to a number of poker-related courses over the years, and now a handful of lectures from one of them are available to watch for free online as part of the school’s OpenCourseWare program.
The lectures can be watched online here.
Instructors in the videos include Kevin Desmond, Joel Fried, Aaron Brown, Bill Chen and Matt Hawrilenko. Both Chen and Hawrilenko are WSOP bracelet winners.
The poker course, which was taught early this year, was under the Sloan School of Management.
“This class gave students the opportunity to be risk takers in a global market, which I think is difficult to replicate in any other way,” Desmond, who is a Master of Finance student, said of his class. “Poker is a game with virtually no barriers to entry. You can be playing anybody in the world. To risk your own money and effectively play against the world is something very similar to what a trader has to do in making trading decisions.”
“I think one thing that caught people by surprise is they didn’t see how far the rabbit hole went down in terms of analysis in poker,' he added.
In 2012, CardRunners pro and MIT Ph.D student Will Ma taught a poker theory class. According to Ma, it could have been the first of its kind at the school. He taught it another time in 2013.
